The White Horse Inn located in the Bvumba is one of the oldest Inns still operating in Zimbabwe and was originally built in 1961 and was bought by the current owner in 1980. The Inn is approximately 17kms from Mutare. It is one of the first lodges you pass when entering the Bvumba area and is only 3kms off the main road, down a very picturesque tarred road through the forest.
White Horse Inn oozes old world charm from the minute you walk into the reception area, which still has many old fashioned fittings. The Inn has various areas where you can relax, whether it is in the traditional lounge with built in fireplace, or the long hallway set up with charming armchairs and tables to unwind in. Off the hallway is the cosy bar, which has a log fire that is lit on cold winter days.
Adjacent to the bar is the dining room, which has traditional red velvet décor and wooden furnishings. The White Horse Inn is booked on a bed and breakfast basis and there is an a la carte menu available for lunch and dinner. The Inn has built up a reputation over the years for serving the finest cuisine in the area – we can most certainly vouch for this!
When the weather is good, meals can be served outside on the patio, which overlooks both the lush green gardens and the pool. A newish feature at the poolside are the hanging basket loungers, these are the ideal place to read a good book, in between ticking off your birding list with the many species that are resident to this area.
There is also a conference room, which can accommodate up to 50 delegates, and the gardens can be hired as a venue for weddings and corporate events. The Inn’s grounds themselves are any garden buff’s dream. There are various terraces, with several intimate seating areas located in different parts of the garden. Many an hour can be spent walking the premises, finding all sorts of unique plants tucked away in a flower bed. And just to add the icing to the cake, this gorgeous garden also has a stream bubbling through the bottom of the garden. It would be the perfect place to set up a picnic blanket and possibly catch a glimpse of the rare Samango monkeys. Just and absolute delight and haven of peace and tranquillity.
There are 2 types of accommodation offered, either in the Inn, or in a comfortable cottage adjacent to the Inn. The cottage has two bedrooms: the first with a double bed and en-suite bathroom and a second bedroom with 3 single beds and separate bathroom. The cottage also has a comfortable lounge with its own fireplace.
The rest of the accommodation is located in the Inn, down windowed hallways lined with beautiful potted geraniums. There are 12 twin or double rooms, as well as 2 mini suites. All the rooms have their own en-suite bathrooms. Complimentary toiletries and limited satellite television is included.
The White Horse Inn is linked to the national grid and so appliances like hair dryers and electric shavers may be used, as long as there isn’t a power cut. If the power does go out, there is a back-up generator. The hot water is heated by electric geysers. WiFi is available as well as full cell phone signal. Laundry can be done at an extra charge. For guests travelling with valuables, there is a central safe at reception where you can store these.
