Spurwing Island

Situated on Lake Kariba in the middle of one of Africa’s most spectacular lakes, overlooked by the majestic Matusadona National Park, Spurwing Island is the perfect place for a tranquil getaway for the wildlife enthusiast, serious fisherman and holiday maker alike.

Spurwing Island offers a range of different activities including scenic boat trips and game viewing on foot, by boat or Landrover. The park boasts a large population of wildlife and bird life, making it a photographer’s paradise!

Spurwing Island is able to cater for a maximum of forty adult guests in three different styles of accommodation. However for special events more guests can be accommodated with prior arrangement. All rooms have scenic views over Lake Kariba and the Matusadona mountains, with a ‘sit for hours’ verandah with outside chairs. Insect spray, mosquito nets and repellents are provided in the rooms.

Off of the front of the bar area is a verandah overlooking the crystal clear pool.  The verandah has a set of garden furniture, as well as a more comfortable lounge suite.  A short distance from the verandah and next to the unfenced pool is a thatched Gazebo for outdoor dining, with a wood braai and small gas grill. Sun-loungers are provided for those wanting to soak up the African sun.

There are 5 bedrooms in total with an additional upstairs “loft” area with 4 single beds and a bathroom leading off it.  Two of the bedrooms have double beds, one has a king size bed and en-suite bathroom, one has a queen size bed plus single bed and the last one has 3 single beds.  There are a total of 4 bathrooms.  Four of the five bedrooms have air con, with the remaining room and loft area having fans due to the open nature of the rooms.  All the rooms are fitted with mosquito nets, but guests are encouraged to bring repellent as well.

Fisherman’s Rest does NOT have WiFi, and will continue not to have.  This is a decision made by the owners as they feel people come to Kariba to get away from all the busyness of day to day communication.  There is however a TV with open view decoder, and a home theatre system, with guests most welcome to bring their own memory sticks, CD’s and DVD’s.  Please just bear in mind that this is a residential area and remain respectful of your neighbours and the wildlife.

There is a back up generator for lighting which will be switched on from 5.30pm to 9pm. Thereafter 6 rechargeable LED lamps are to be used.  Water is provided by the municipality, so guests are encouraged to bring their own drinking water.

Fisherman’s Rest is a self-catering house, but it does provide tissue, hand wash and dish washing liquid.  Guests to bring all other items such as food and toiletries.  The property is fully fenced, but guests are still asked to keep vigilant when it comes to wild animals and your valuables.

Check-in time is 2p.m, and check out time is 10a.m(unless otherwise organised).
