Once we had settled in to Kariba life, it was time to start sharing our little piece of paradise with our family and friends. Great timing as Woody’s mom (Moya) was due on a trip out from the UK! One of her favourite excursions was when we went out fishing with some friends, who are very familiar with Kariba – and we were able to feed the fish eagles. She had been desperate to see one up close, well … you couldn’t really get closer than one taking a fish off the water a couple meters in front of the boat! And to hear their call while sitting on the lake fishing is SUCH an iconic Zim sound (those of you who aren’t in Zim anymore will know exactly what I’m talking about.)
Moya’s second most favourite activity was when we organised to have a “beach dinner” as a belated birthday present at Carribea Bay. There was no extra charge for this – just a little pre-warning is all Carribea Bay management need. We arrived in time for sundowners at the ‘Round Bar’, before moving over to the beautifully set up dinner on the beach – and what a special dinner it was – we were the ONLY ones there, so had the entire beach to ourselves!
Our first friend to visit, was my oldest friend Nix, with her 3 year old twins. We were a bit concerned when it poured with rain the fist day of their stay – but were very blessed with beautiful sunny weather for the rest their trip. A MUST for anyone with kids is the Bream Farm at Chawara Harbour. It is such a fantastic day out for the whole family. The kids are entertained for hours catching fish on traditional stick rods, while the adults can just chill (if they aren’t too busy putting worms on the rods for the kids all day that is.) You are permitted to bring your own drinks and food. For those with more energy than a packed picnic, there is a braai area for communal use.
A holiday in Kariba with children would not be complete without a visit to the Super Tube at Carribea Bay. The staff need a minimum of 3 people to pay before they will switch it on – so be sure to grab all your mates. We had a fabulous time, yes … I said WE … who said super tubing is only for kids? Woody and I joined in and had a great old time!
