Musangano Lodge is a lovely lodge located just off the main Harare to Mutare road and is only half an hour from the border town of Mutare, approximately 3 hours from Harare. The lodge is known locally as the gateway to the Eastern Highlands and is the ideal stop-over when travelling to Mutare, Bvumba, Chimanimani, Gonarazhou or Mozambique. Cleverly built up on the side of a mountain this location offers guests who are wanting to spend more time in the area a central place in which to base themselves when exploring the surrounding tourist attractions like Nyanga, Honde Valley and Bvumba.
The main entertainment area is built near the entrance to the lodge with an inviting reception area, wonderfully managed by very friendly staff. Adjacent to the reception is both the indoor and outdoor restaurant. In summer most people prefer to dine in the indoor restaurant, which is nice and cool, with large windows and unique floor tiling. On weekends the chef delights in using the outside braai area to cook on, offering guests a different setting for their meals. Behind the braai area is the new conference room which can seat up to 80 workshop participants and between 100 to 150 guests for banquets or receptions.
Opposite the main reception area is the kids playground, complete with large sandpit and tree house! For those without kids there is a volleyball court nearby, or if that sounds like too much work, why not relax in the pool next door, which has a foosball. We bet many a heated battle has taken place here.
Musangano Lodge is made up of chalets and lodges offering both self-catering or full board options. These thatched rooms are built into the mountain behind the central entertainment area, and offer gorgeous views over the surrounding farming area. They are nice and cool, set in amongst lovely Miombo woodland and are the perfect location to have an early morning coffee or a sundowner. They comprise of:
- 5 x one bedroomed full board chalets (only 1 has a braai area)
- 3 x two bedroomed self-catering lodges
- 1 x three bedroomed self-catering lodges
Each chalet has a bedroom, with en-suite bathroom with a shower, tea and coffee making facilities, as well as a small fridge and a front patio. Each lodge has a lounge with fireplace, opening on to a fully equipped kitchen area. There is one shared bathroom in the two bedroomed lodge, and two shared bathrooms in the three bedroomed lodge. All have patio’s with sweeping views.
Musangano is linked to the national grid, and therefore appliances like hair-dryers and electric shavers may be used, so long as there isn’t a power cut. If the power does go out, there is a back-up generator able to supply the whole camp, but heavy electrical drawing appliances should not be used. The lodges have limited satellite TV, and laundry is offered at an extra fee. The hot water is heated by solar geysers. For guests travelling with valuables there is a central safe at reception.
Musangano offers many specialist package activities for their surrounding area, from “A Dive into the Community” to “Arts and Crafts in Mutare” and even “Majestic Mutarazi Falls” to name but a few. The most popular activities on the grounds themselves are the various hikes up the mountains, whether you are a “newbie” hiker or a seasoned pro, there is a hike for you.
If you are ever on your way to Mutare, Chimanimani, Gonarezhou or Mozambique and need a refreshing stop-over, call in to Musangano Lodge. Or better yet, it is the perfect venue if your company needs to host a conference, with excellent staff with many years’ experience.
