Winter in Kariba brought beautiful clear days that started off pretty chilly but warmed up when the sun came out, to the point where only a light jacket was needed. One morning we found a Tree Frog huddled up on a wooden bench, he stood out like a sore thumb because the bench was painted green and he was white. I’ve always had a soft spot for these frogs, as most Zimbabweans do.
Early on another morning, while I was cycling with the local running club, we came across a group of Zebra’s out near the airport. They weren’t too worried about us (even though I looked like I was about to mug someone with my winter buff on). I am still blown away by the fact that I can ride/run with the wildlife here. Sometimes it’s still a little too wild. The morning following this particular ride out to the airport, a pride of lions was spotted crossing the road near where we had parked! Scary thought of what might have happened if they’d been around a day earlier.
Woody and I take advantage of the gorgeous winter weather to get out and about on the weekends, not far from where we live is a very picturesque point from where you have a stunning view of Lake Kariba as the sun sets. It is a favourite of ours because of the abundant birdlife. On one of our picnics, we were lucky enough to spot both a Saddle-billed Stork, as well as an uncommon Hooded Vulture. What a treat!
On that same day, while we were enjoyed our lunch, we noticed some of the smaller birds making a commotion in a tree near us, upon closer inspection we found a Spotted Bush Snake. He was quietly going about his own business, and although I am not a huge fan of snakes, I have to admit he was pretty good looking
and he behaved himself while we were there and didn’t come any closer – which I was very grateful for.
