Little Makalolo

Little Makalolo (commonly just called Little Mak by locals) is one of Wilderness Safaris ‘Classic Camps’ and is located inside Hwange National Park, in the south-eastern section, on a private concession.  This area is a prime game viewing area, with the Ngamo Plains easily accessible, offering fantastic game viewing. Access is either by 4×4 self-drive vehicles or a plane in to the Linkwasha airstrip.

The camp itself is made up of traditional tented accommodation and 2 separate main areas on wooden decking set back amongst some beautiful shady trees.  The most talked about feature of this camp is the elevated decked pool area with breakfast bar and lounging area with un unbeatable view of Little Mak Pan from the gorgeous infinity splash pool!  Once you get in the pool, you won’t want to get out, with fantastic bar service to boot.

The other entertainment area is where you will find the fully kitted out dining room, also with a view out across the pan, which has its very own log pile hide for use by the guests while at Little Mak. There is also a fire pit area between the 2 entertainment areas, the perfect spot to enjoy an ice-cold sundowner drink.  Sandy paths or raised wooden walkways link the bedroom tents and main area.

Aside from the Tour Leader’s tent, all of the bedrooms have en-suite facilities including indoor and outdoor shower, double basin vanity and separate toilet.  The rooms also have a veranda with seating area, easy chairs, canvas blinds that roll up and down for all weather conditions, writing desk and chair, multi-plug adaptor charging facilities, tea and coffee making facilities (hot water will be provided in the mornings and on request.)

Little Mak is not linked to the national power grid and electricity is supplied by either solar or generator, so appliances like hairdryers and electric shavers cannot be used. Hot water for the showers is heated by solar geysers.  For guests traveling with valuables, individual canvas bags with padlocks (keys remain with guests) are supplied which are then stored in a central safe.

While all lodges offer activities, Little Mak stands out because it offers the Star Bed Excursion, which is located overlooking the Madison Pan.  At no extra charge, guests are whisked away to a beautiful elevated location in the bush, over looking the pan, where they get to spend the night, with no other guests or noise to disturb them.  A guide is discreetly stationed in his own accommodation within radio call in case of emergency.
