Imvelo’s Elephant Express Rail Car

The Elephant Express Rail Car has been operating since 2014 and is the ideal way to transfer to Imvelo’s Safari Lodges, Bomani Tented Lodge and Camelthorn Lodge, on the south-eastern outskirts of Hwange National Park. The coach itself was built by Martinus Nel, and has 2 Toyota Landcruiser 2H diesel engines, one at either end of the coach.
Departure is from Dete Station at 13:30. You are met by your guide, who will be with you for the duration of your stay at whichever lodge you are transferring to. A light lunch and drinks are served at the station before a prompt departure at 14:00.
The Elephant Express has very experienced train drivers, all having worked on the National Railways for many years. Most of them having driven the same tracks so often that they know them like the back of their hands and you will notice them slowing down before a slight bump in the track not discernible to the average traveller.
The railway tracks form the actual boundary of the Hwange National Park, which has no fences. So, there is always plenty of wildlife to be seen on your 2-hour trip, as game freely crosses over from one side of the tracks to the other. On many trips the train has had to come to a stop to wait for a pride of lions to move off the tracks or for a herd of elephants to cross! Luckily, there is no need to rush, and what better way to reach your destination than sipping on a gin and tonic in an open coach, while watching the animals go by?

Upon arrival at Ngamo Siding a game drive vehicle will be waiting to drive you to your lodge, which is only a short distance away. You will arrive at your lodge in time for sunset drinks and snacks.

Following your stay at the lodge, you will again transfer by game vehicle to Ngamo Siding for departure at 11a.m. This gives you ample time to have an early breakfast before participating in any of the activities offered at the lodge: horse ride, game drive or village tour. A packed lunch and drinks will be served on the Elephant Express as you head back to Dete Station, arriving at 13:00.
