Gwango Heritage Resort

Gwango Heritage Resort is a fantastic “value for money” resort, situated as close to the Hwange National Park as you can get.  Gwango’s boundary is the same railway line that forms the boundary of the Hwange National Park Main Camp entrance.  The resort used to be an old railway farm, but, is now owned and run by Elisabeth and Danny, who inherited the land from her late mother.

Gwango Heritage Resort is very easily accessible; a 4×4 vehicle is not required, as the resort is located just off the main tar road leading to Hwange Main Camp.  It is a short 2 hour drive from Victoria Falls, and 3 hours from Bulawayo.

The resort is made up of various accommodation options, placed cleverly around the grounds, with a central restaurant and entertainment area.  The owners are always making changes to improve on the resort, but at the present time, the main area consists of:

Situated within walking distance of the main area are the accommodation options:

Gwango is an eco-friendly resort, and therefore uses solar to generate their power.  So, appliances like hairdryers, irons and electric shavers may not be used.  There is a back-up generator able to supply the whole camp if need be.  The hot water is heated by gas geysers.

As well as offering the normal game drives into the national park, Gwango is unique in that they also offer game drives around their own estate.   This is a bonus for two reasons, the first being you do not have to pay the added National Parks fees to go on a game drive.  And secondly, you are able to go at night time, whereas the National Park has a law enforcing you to leave the park by sunset.  A highlight at Gwango is the 2 hour ‘Elephant Tracking Night Drive’ around the estate, especially spectacular at full moon.
