Deteema Springs

Deteema Springs is named after the Deteema Dam it is located near, with the actual springs running along the front of the camp.  Deteema is situated inside Hwange National Park, in the north western section, on a private concession.  Access is either by transfers to Robins Camp, 4×4 self-drive vehicles, or a charter flight in to the Robins Camp airstrip.  A maximum of 20kg of luggage per person is allowed for light aircraft flights, including hand luggage and camera equipment. Please ensure that all luggage is soft-sided. Only bags without wheels are permitted. Luggage dimensions should not exceed 25cm (10 inches) wide, 30cm (12 inches) high and 62 cm (24 inches) long.  GPS co-ordinates are s 18 deg 40.8029    E 26 deg 09.0772.

The camp itself is made up of 8 luxury tents in total, with a maximum capacity of 18 guests.  These tents are designated as:

  • 7 x twin-bedded with two three quarter beds.
  • 1 x family consisting of a king-size bed and 2 three quarter beds).

All of the 2 x three quarter beds have mattress converters and so are able to transform the twin beds into king-size beds.  Each bedroom has a front patio, with chairs and table, overlooking either the dam to the left of the camp, or the springs to the right.  The en-suite facilities include an indoor shower, a basin and toilet.

Deteema Springs does allow children who are over 6 years of age.  But please note that they take no more than 2 children over 6 years of age in the family luxury tent with 2 adults and 1 child and 1 adult in the standard luxury tent.  No children under 12 are allowed to participate in game walk activities.

The entertainment area has a lovely bar, with very unique seating in the form of re-purposed tractor seats, which are surprisingly comfortable to sit in!  There are a variety of intimate seating areas in this large, open-plan central section, all looking out over the beautiful African bush.  Another favourite spot to view game from is the fire pit located at the front of the main entertainment area.  Slightly off to the side is the pool area, complete with sun loungers to soak up the rays, while still enjoying the game viewing from the luxury of the pool.

Deteema Springs power is provided by solar, with back up generators for emergencies.  Therefore appliances like hair dryers and electric shavers may not be used, and are not provided.  All of the tented rooms have 220V plug points which can be used to charge batteries and sleep apnoea machines.  There is no Wi-Fi in the tents but it can be accessed near the main area.

The hot water is heated by solar geysers.  For guests travelling with valuables, there are lock boxes in each room.  Complimentary tea and coffee facilities are provided.  There is also a laundry service available which is also complimentary.  The water in camp is provided by borehole, and is therefore safe to drink.

The activities on offer at Deteema Springs are:

  • morning and evening game drives
  • walking (guide dependant)
  • game viewing from the comfort of your own tent

While waiting for your next activity, it is definitely worth popping in to the library, which is located separately from the main area, near the entrance to the lodge, which has a wide variety of reading material.  And if you are really lucky you’ll get to observe the resident pair of Hammerkops who have built their nest in the Star Chestnut tree (Sterculia Rogersii) next to the library!
