Chundukwa River Lodge is one of the oldest properties in the area, having been established in 1965, and has always been authentically Zambian owner run. It is ideally located only 25kms from the resort town of Livingstone, which is famous for the mighty Victoria Falls. The best way to get to Chundukwa is to fly into Livingstone International Airport, where the lodge will have a driver waiting to collect you. Some might prefer to fly into Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls Airport, where once again transfers can be organised. For self-drive guests, the lodge is located on the Zambezi River, along the stretch between Livingstone and Kazangula Bridge (Botswana).
Chundukwa Lodge is built right on the banks of the Zambezi River, offering stunning private views of the river from all of the rooms, as well as from the bar, pool, deck and entertainment areas. As mentioned before, unlike other lodges, Chundukwa is not located in the town of Livingstone itself, but rather a short distance away, so guests have a much more private and personal experience. The owners are very nature based, and also have a horse ranch and organic gardens.
The lodge offers 2 different types of accommodation, the all inclusive Riverside Chalets or Chundu Cottage, which can also be hired on a fully-inclusive, full board, dinner bed and breakfast or self-catering options.
Riverside Chalets x 5
Our favourite feature about Chundukwa is that each and every chalet is unique and completely different. No “cookie cutter” design here! All the chalets have an open-fronted layout giving gorgeous views of the Zambezi River, from the privacy of your room. All the chalets are en-suite, and can either be fitted with a king or twin beds. Some of the chalets have outside showers, while others have outside baths!
Amenities
- 250v plug sockets with multi-country adapters and USB ports for charging phones, cameras and computers. Please bring your own converters if required
- Large walk-in mosquito nets
- Fans (note – due to the open-fronted nature of the chalets accommodation they do not have air-conditioning)
- Lock-up safe
- Gowns
- Electric blankets in the winter
- Mosquito spray
- Tissues
- A cupboard with hanging space for clothes
- Luggage racks
- Water flasks
- Good quality organic shampoo, conditioner and moisturiser. As the lodge is situated between two waterways (the river in front and series of lagoons behind) we prefer that you utilise our shampoos, creams and soaps that are organic and environmentally-friendly
Child Policy
Please note that the Riverside Chalets are not suitable for children under 10 years old, unless in the case of reserving the Lodge on an exclusive-use basis. Children aged 10-12 years pay 50% when sharing with two adults in a Riverside Chalet. Teens aged 13 years and above pay 80% when sharing with two adults in a Riverside Chalet. Persons from 18 years and older are considered adults and will therefore require their own chalet at the applicable rates.
Chundu Cottage is an appropriate family-friendly solution for families with young children.
Chundu Cottage
The cottage is located a little further upstream from the Riverside Chalets, ensuring families or groups that book here have even more space, comfort and privacy. It is hired on a sole-use basis, minimum of 4 night booking, and sleeps up to six guests and children of all ages are welcome. The cottage features two bedrooms downstairs and a loft bedroom upstairs, ideal for older children. There are 2 bathrooms, one is an en-suite and the other services the second bedroom and loft room. There is a large living area, swimming pool, a choice of outdoor dining areas, Wi-Fi, a coffee bar and a fully-equipped kitchen.

All materials provided and used on the lodge are eco-friendly, as the lodge is situated between two waterways (the Zambezi River in front and a series of lagoons behind – home to fish, birds, reptiles and otters to name a few!) The lodge kindly requests that guests utilise the provided shampoos, creams and soaps that are organic and environmentally-friendly.
Child Policy
Chundu Cottage is an appropriate family-friendly solution for families with young children. Children 5-12 years pay 50% when sharing with four adults at Chundu Cottage. Children under 5 years stay on a complimentary basis. Kindly note that we can install a safety fence around the pool at Chundu Cottage on request
The owners are very proud of the fact that they built Chundukwa River Lodge themselves, and that all building materials and furniture are produced in Zambia from locally burnt clay bricks, to sustainable local reeds, Kalahari sand, recycled wood and steel. Local artisans were hired, including weavers, thatchers, tinsmiths, tailors, welders and carpenters from the nearby villages. The chalets are made from wood, with thatched roofing and walled with a Kalahari sand and cement mixture, in keeping with the traditional local method of walling.
