Changa Safari Camp is a beautiful tented lodge, built on a 4km stretch of lake frontage on the shores of Lake Kariba, in the Matusadona National Park. The camp was conceived and built by the nature loving Higgins and Preston families. Both families have always loved the wilderness and have spent many family holidays camping in the African bush. It is hard to believe that the original “plans” were drawn up and written on a piece of paper overlooking the stunning views the camp now overlooks. The camp was opened in 2012.
The central area has a lovely, quiet, open-air lounge, overlooking a wooden deck and private beach. Depending on the level of the lake, the water can come quite close to the deck area. In the evening, dinner is sometimes served on this beach area, providing a unique “under the stars” dining experience. There is also a nice fire-pit on the beach, which is a very popular area to meet for pre-dinner drinks. WiFi is available in the lounge area.
Not too far from the lounge lies the bar and pool. The bar has been built out of the hull of an old boat, giving it heaps of character. There is an infinity pool located on a beautiful deck, in amongst the trees, close to the bar. The view of the lake from this point is stunning, another perfect sundowner spot.
- The accommodation consists of:
- 6 deluxe tents
- 2 Family deluxe tents
These rooms are East African style tents, all overlooking the Lake. Each tent is finished with en-suite facilities, open air bath, shower and private deck, with gorgeous views of the lake and the Matusadona Mountains. All tents are mosquito proofed and have fans with dressing table and universal plug points. There is also a flask with chilled water and glasses in each tent. Hair-dryers can be provided upon request from reception, as well as a lockable safety deposit bag for all your valuables.
Just off of the deck of each room a discreet sprinkler system has been installed, which, when turned on, encourages even more bird life. To take full advantage of this a hammock has been put up in the shade of the surrounding trees, which is the perfect place to relax and watch the world go by.
The camp electricity is solar, with a daily laundry service available. There are no fences around the camp, letting the animals roam as freely as possible. For this reason you will be escorted back to your rooms in the evening by a trained guide. Early morning wake up calls with tea and coffee delivered to your tent are available upon request.
Breakfast and lunch are both served al fresco on either the main elevated deck, under the shaded thatched open air dining room or under the trees overlooking lake. There is afternoon tea available with a selection of teas, local coffee and a sweet treat. A candle-lit dinner is served at 7.30pm, at a different location each night of your stay.
There are a variety of exciting and relaxing activities to choose from, including both morning and afternoon game drives, fishing charters, Sinyati Gorge trips, as well as game walks on the concession, with an experienced and knowledgeable guide. The camp also has a small Curio Shop opposite reception.
Changa is committed to making a meaningful contribution to the preservation of the environment and wildlife as well as the communities in the area. Their vision is to teach and create awareness through projects such as Matusadona Anti-Poaching Project (MAPP).
If you are planning on spending time in the Kariba area, I would highly recommend Changa Safari Camp as a special treat. You will leave feeling thoroughly relaxed, as well as utterly spoilt.
