Camp Silwane is a unique new camp recently built in the Silwane Conservation Area, which borders Hwange National Park, only 4 km from Kennedy Picnic Site. Access is by high clearance 4 x 4 vehicles, either through the national park, or via Gwayi from the main Victoria Falls to Bulawayo road.
Silwane has 4 different types of accommodation on offer:
1. Camp Silwane – fully catered accommodation;
2. Camp Silwane – self-catering accommodation;
3. Acacia Grove Camp Site – camping;
4. Somadada Platform – self-catering.
Both of Camp Silwane’s catered and self-catering accommodation is located on the same site, with the catered tents located on the left-hand side of the camp, while the self-catering tents are on the right. The entire camp is made up of meru-style safari tents, nestled in amongst and under a grove of magnificent false Mopane trees.
Camp Silwane: Catered Accommodation
The catered section of the camp has 4 en-suite tented rooms (3 twin/double plus 1 family room) built up on wooden decks. The large en-suite bathrooms all have a flush toilet, shower, basin and lots of table space. Each room has charging ports, mosquito nets, more table space and a small verandah with seating out the front and even their own fire-pit. The main entertainment area boasts an elevated viewing deck above the dining room, lounge and bar, where you have a perfect view of the watering hole in front of the camp.
Camp Silwane: Self-catering Accommodation
The self-catering section of camp also has 4 en-suite tented rooms but instead of being raised up on decks these are built on concrete slabs at floor level. They also have large en-suite bathrooms with a flush toilet, shower, basin and lots of table space and of course they also have their own verandah with seating and their own individual fire-pits, and charging ports, mosquito nets, and tables. As these are self-catering rooms, they have access to a shared kitchen and all its facilities.
All your crockery and cutlery are provided; there is a solar freezer, fridge, dining table and chairs as well as lighting. A camp hand is available to assist with cleaning, washing up, stoking the boiler and braai pit fires. A favourite spot of the self-catering visitors is the wooden deck located at the front of the main entertainment area which offers a nice view of the waterhole at the front of the camp.
Both the catered and self-catering rooms accommodate 2 adults per tent. Stretchers and bedding are available for children, with a maximum of 3 children per tent allowed.
Acacia Grove Camp Site
This charming camping area is located some distance from Camp Silwane, overlooking a lovely pan with 5 natural camp sites set a decent distance apart. Each camp site is named after a different animal, our favourite is Civet Cat Camp Site. There are 3 shared bush camp ablution facilities, comprised of pulley showers (water heated by camp hand), flush toilet and basin. There is drinkable water on tap, and a camp attendant who will assist where he can. In the centre of the camping area there is a shared thatched rondavel for guests use. Each of the 5 camp sites can take a maximum 4 adults per site.
Somadada Platform
For those who have never experienced camping on a platform – you haven’t lived! You really, really have to add this to your bucket list. And the Somadada Platform is one of the best in our opinion. It is located just outside the park (you can actually see the railway line that marks the perimeter of the park if you look really hard) and has the most amazing amount of wildlife passing through. It is an exclusive raised platform overlooking a watering hole much frequented by wildlife.
Somadada is made up of a large open plan deck, where you can place your bed and mosquito net. There is a small bush bathroom with running water, a flush toilet and a basin halfway up the stairway to the deck (secured by a gate which you can close so you don’t have any unexpected night time visitors). The shower is actually located ON the platform, and is open air with stunning views across the bush. Somadada takes a maximum 4 people.
