Camelthorn Lodge is another of Imvelo Safari Group’s luxury lodges, located in beautiful woodland, not far from their sister lodge, Bomani. Both lodges are just outside the southern corner of Hwange National Park. Camelthorn Lodge gets its name from the massive Camelthorn tree (Acacia erioloba ) that is the centre piece of the entertainment area of the lodge. The lodge is a 4 – 5 hour road transfer from Victoria Falls or Bulawayo, or an easy 1 hour small plane charter from Victoria Falls or Bulawayo.
The main lodge building is built around a magnificent old camelthorn tree. The building is a stone structure, with thatched roof, and is open sided in a U-shape, around the tree. The lounge area is on a raised wooden deck, open on 2 sides to take advantage of the woodland views. The cosy “camlethorn bar” is adjacent to this, with the reception area in the centre. The huge dining room is in the other end of the building with 3 beautiful fireplaces for the colder months.
The open varandah area under the Camelthorn tree is an ideal place to have romantic, candlelit dinners under the stars, or relaxing brunches during the day, while watching and listening to the fantastic birdlife (this is weather dependant of course). There is also a fire pit area slightly to the front of the patio area, where guests are welcome to sit and ponder life’s mysteries. Free WiFi is available in the main lodge area, as well as cell phone reception.
- There are 8 forest villas that can be made up with either one king bed, or 2 x twin double beds. Each villa is 82m sq, with a flat roof and stone walls and has:
- A large bedroom and lounge area with sliding glass doors;
- A private en-suite bathroom with a bath and feature window overlooking the woodland, plus a large shower and closed off toilet;
- An outdoor varandah, with hammock;
- And a private balcony upstairs, accessed via a spiral stairway, this area has a comfortable day bed and some of the balconies now have their very own splash pools
The villa’s all have ceiling fans, a fireplace, emergency whistle and air horn, an electronic safe, and a mobile LED lamp and bath robes. There is complimentary mosquito repellent and free daily laundry (weather dependent). Electricity is provided by solar or diesel generator.
As with all of Imvelo’s Safari Lodges, there are many activities to keep you entertained and with Hwange National Park only 1km away, you have easy access to all the game drives (both during the day and at night) and to the game walks with a professional guide. The most popular activity by far, is the a photographic trip to the underground hide in front of a beautifully located waterhole where elephants can be photographed from toe level silhouetted against the sky at a distance of 25 feet! You can see some of the memorable photos already taken, framed in the reception and bar areas of the lodge.
Other activities that are included in the nightly rate include game drives, game walks, night drives, the look up game viewing hide, pump runs and school tours and village visits are included in the nightly rate. In-house spa treatments and daily horse riding activities are not included in the nightly rate, prices on request”.
