Previously the old Barkers Lodge, Amanzi has been running for the past 16 years, it is owned and run by husband and wife team, Andrew and Julia. It offers a 5 star stay in the heart of the northern suburbs of the capital city of Harare.
The lodge consists of 16 private en-suite thatched rooms or suites. The unique thing about the rooms is that they each have a completely different décor theme, based on different countries in Africa. The brain child behind this is Julia, who is a critically acclaimed for her interior design. The suites all have unique artefacts, collected from around the African continent, giving each room it’s very own personal touch. Some of the rooms even have their very own private balcony or verandah spaces. All the en-suite bathrooms have a shower and a bath. The rooms all have air-conditioners and heaters, heated beds with electric blankets, telephones (complimentary house and local calls, international calls charged at an extra cost), as well as tea and coffee making facilities and a mini bar. There is unlimited wireless broadband internet access (free of charge) as well as full satellite TV and an in room safe. A same day laundry service is offered at an extra cost.
The lodge gardens themselves are another unique aspect of Amanzi, with both Andrew and Julia passionate about creating the most relaxing and harmonious feeling possible when walking or just sitting in the gardens. They teamed together with Alan Barbour, one of Zimbabwe’s leading landscape architects, noted for his highly original water features. The garden project took a year to design was most certainly worth it. When walking around the lodge, surrounded by rock formations and rare cycads, with the abundant bird life, you most certainly do not feel like are you in the bustling Harare. The most talked about feature is probably the gorgeous waterfall greeting visitors on arrival.
The property is fully walled and security fenced, with a guard posted at the entrance boom 24hours a day. The lodge facilities include a conference room and complimentary guest meeting room, a swimming pool adjacent to the all-weather tennis court, as well as a popular spa and gym.
At the restaurant, Julia and Andrew again felt the need to introduce new and exotic tastes to the Zimbabwean palate, rather than limiting the menu to conventional cuisine. Andrew’s passion for Thai and African foods, together with Julia’s more European tastes, have combined to offer an inspired selection of fusion food, which now includes Fusion Tapas.
If you have to be in Harare, whether it be for business or pleasure, I would highly recommend Amanzi Lodge. You cannot get a more artistically decorated room, with unique food, in more restful and peaceful surroundings. The lodge is only 20 minutes from the airport and offers transfers at an extra cost.
