Robins Camp

Robins Camp is situated in the north western section of the Hwange National Park, 110 kilometres from Victoria Falls and 55 kilometres from the Botswana – Pandamatenga border.  The camp area was originally Little Toms and Big Toms farms acquired by Herbert George Robins in the early 1900’s.  In 1934 fearing that ‘Tom’s Farms’ would be sold on his death to become a shooting box, he offered to bequeath it to the Southern Rhodesian Government on condition that it be maintained for all time as a game sanctuary.

Access to Robins Camp is either by 4×4 self-drive vehicles, road transfer or a charter flight directly to the Robins Camp airstrip.  A maximum of 20kg of luggage per person is allowed for light aircraft flights, including hand luggage and camera equipment. Please ensure that all luggage is soft-sided. Only bags without wheels are permitted. Luggage dimensions should not exceed 25cm (10 inches) wide, 30cm (12 inches) high and 62 cm (24 inches) long.  GPS co-ordinates18°37’45.43”S      25°59’10.56”      Elevation 972m.

The camp itself is made up of 36 en-suite twin/double bed chalets, in 2 different sections/villages.   There is also a camp site which has 25 sites (max 4 guests per site), as well as 4 guides rooms in the Acacia Village section.

Robins Camp does allow children, those from 3-12 are half price, and children under 3 are FOC (free of charge).   No children under 16 are allowed to participate in game walk activities, and families with children are to use a private game vehicle in order not to disturb the other guests.

The entertainment area boasts a restaurant, with a view out over the pool and waterhole in front of the camp.  There is a separate bar and comfortable lounge area which has Satellite TV.  Robins Camp also has a very unique feature in the form of a museum tower block, where the late Herbert Robins used to have a telescope with which he watched his labour force out in the fields.  Many of his original belongings have been preserved in this three storey tower.

As mentioned above, Robins Camp power is provided by solar, and power off the national grid, with back up generators for emergencies.  Therefore appliances like hair dryers and electric shavers may be used, with hair dryers available at reception.  All rooms have 220V plug points which can be used to charge batteries.  There is Wi-Fi available at an extra charge at designated areas.

The hot water is heated by solar or electric geysers.  For guests travelling with valuables, there are lock boxes in each room.  Complimentary tea and coffee facilities are provided in the main restaurant area.  There is also a laundry service available at a nominal charge.  The water in camp is provided by borehole, and is therefore safe to drink.  Smoking is not allowed in the chalets, but only in designated areas indicated.

The activities on offer at Robins Camp are:

  • morning and evening game drives
  • walking (guide dependant)
  • optional photographic or birding excursions

Guests staying at the camp site are welcome to use the swimming pool, and book meals at the restaurant in advance.   The entire camp is electric fenced, but care must still be taken in case wildlife breach the fence.
