Bomani Tented Lodge is one of the Imvelo Safari Group’s luxury lodges, located on a 5000 acre private reserve within the Ngamo Forest Area, just outside the Hwange National Park, on the south eastern corner. The name Bomani means “warrior”, and it somehow seems fitting for this tented camp that just oozes character. The lodge is a 4 – 5 hour road transfer from Victoria Falls or Bulawayo, or an easy 1 hour small plane charter from Victoria Falls or Bulawayo. Bomani even boasts its own airstrip, but please note, this one is not open during the rainy season. Instead light air charters usually land and take off from Sipepa – about 1 hour drive from camp.
The main lodge area consists of an open fronted thatch building, with a teak viewing deck overlooking the lodge waterhole. Inside this building there is a comfortable lounge area, adjacent to the bar. There is a lovely dining area which is used when the weather is bad, but most meals are taken near the fire pit in front of the main building, overlooking the pan. The main building has overhead fans, free WiFi, as well as cell phone reception. A slightly hidden feature of this entertainment area is the splash pool, which is set in a raised wooden deck, also overlooking the waterhole.
- There are 11 tented suites and one thatched family bungalow:
- 5 x Saddlebill Tents raised 1 metre above the ground on wooden decks and overlook the Ngamo Plain (3 x twin suites and 2 x double suites)
- 1 x Sable Suite (family unit) slightly apart from the other rooms, but also raised on wooden decks and overlook the Ngamo Plain (2 rooms with 1 x kingsize bed, 2nd room has 2 x 3/4 beds and a further 2 x 3/4 beds can be added)
- 4 x Spurwing Suites at ground level and overlooking the lodge waterhole (2 x twin suites, 1 x double suite and 1 x honeymoon suite)
- 1 x Thatched bungalow also at ground level and overlooking the same waterhole (1 x queen-sized bed only)
All the tents are very comfortably furnished with private en-suite bathrooms and hot running water, which is provided by Rhodesian Boilers. Electricity is solar or diesel generator fed and therefore appliances like hair dryers and electric shavers may not be used. The rooms all have ceiling or standing fans, emergency whistle and air horn, an electronic safe and a mobile LED lamp. There is complimentary mosquito repellent and free daily laundry (weather dependent).
Bomani offers a multitude of activities to keep you entertained, from game drives both during the day and at night time) to game walks with a professional guide. There are school tours and village visits, daily horse riding activities. If you want to get a real feel for the park then I recommend going on a “pump run,” where you will assist the guides who take an all day trip into the park to visit the 15 boreholes/waterholes Imvelo maintains in and around the park, to drop off fuel and oil for the motors as well as rations and supplies for the pump attendants. If you are looking for something a little more relaxing, then some time in the “Look Up Game Viewing Hide” is a real experience, being a specialized 6m long underground blind with en-suite flush toilet.
