Matobo Hills Lodge is a privately-owned lodge located INSIDE the Matopos National Park. One of the benefits of this is that you get a real feel for the environment while driving through the national park, before you even get to the lodge. The lodge itself is built on top of a huge granite boulder, with the central entertainment area having floor to ceiling windows to take full advantage of the jaw-dropping views. While talking of the entertainment area, mention has to be made of the bar and specifically the cocktail menu, as well as the traditional favourites, the lodge has invented its own cocktails too, definitely worth a try after a long day of hiking.
Matobo Hills Lodge is surrounded by historic wanders, and has 3 hiking trails on their property. There are many activities offered, game drives, cultural trips, visits to the cave painting sites as well as organised walks up to Rhodes Grave, the location of the world-famous Cecil John Rhodes grave. By far the most popular activity is the Rhino Safari, where you are able to track an endangered rhino on foot with a professional guide.
After a day of doing whichever activities you prefer (or maybe just relaxing at the lodge), the perfect way to chill and unwind is in the gorgeous pool adjacent to the entertainment area with a cocktail. The pool has been naturally built into the rocks and is crystal clear, nice and cool. Meals are cooked in the traditional African style and the freshest ingredients are used, as much from the farm nearby as possible. Bush dinners can be organised by request for special occasions and are very unique and totally unforgettable.
The lodge offers 18 large airy rooms, either double, twin or family designed. These rooms are all thatched which makes them beautifully cool in summer and insulates them to keep the warmth in during the winter months. Each lodge is located on its own with no lodges connecting to one another in order to maximise privacy. While walking to and from your room you are very likely to come across bush buck, duikers and rock rabbits.
