The Wallow Lodge is another Wild Horizons product and, as with all their other lodges, a great deal of thought has been put into making this lodge unique, sustainable and environmentally friendly. The Wallow Lodge is only about a 20 minute drive from Victoria Falls town in the Wild Horizons Wildlife Sanctuary, a private concession in the Victoria Falls National Park. The lodge overlooks the Masuwe River, which flows into the Zambezi River and is surrounded by bush and therefore attracts a large amount of birdlife, as well as game. The mist from the Victoria Falls themselves, better known as “the smoke that thunders” can be seen in the distance above the treetops on the horizon.
The Wallow only has 16 suites to accommodate a maximum of thirty-two guests. All the rooms are en-suite with double basins and both an indoor AND outdoor shower. The beds can be configured on request to either double or twin.
All the rooms have:
- Ceiling to floor mosquito nets that fall away from the beds;
- Fans & air conditioning unit;
- Tea and Coffee facilities;
- Hair dryers;
- Digital safes;
- Plug sockets that cater for most foreign plugs, including USB ports in the wall;
- Laundry service;
- Nightly turn down service;
- Complimentary toiletries;
- Private viewing deck;
- Wi-Fi.
The main entertainment area of the lodge has a lovely large deck leading off the front of the main building, where the bar and dining area are located. The most popular feature is the sunken fire-pit overlooking the Masuwe River at the front of the property. Also overlooking the river is the lodge’s infinity pool, with a curio shop and library located in the main building.
The lodge endeavours to be environmentally friendly: their electricity is generated by solar power, they have an on site water purification system, the deck has been built using environmentally friendly materials, and as many non-disposable products are in use as possible ensuring the lodge leave as light a footprint as possible. Wild Horizons encourages guests to join in the smarter system with their ‘no plastic-no straw’ policy.
The Wallow Lodge prides itself on being “the perfect destination for families and small groups who want to reconnect with nature and spend quality time together” and we can attest to this. Sadly, due to the wild nature of the lodge they only accept children who are 7 years old and older, but families with older children will settle in very nicely and are sure to have a most memorable holiday.
